“It’s cancer, unfortunately you don’t have long, we are running out of time”. Those are the words nobody wants to hear. When our Dad was delivered that news earlier this year the first thing he said was he wanted to go to Hospice.

The decision was made to bring Dad home for his final days with the guidance of Hospice at Home, so his wife and family could care for him (his tribe as he called us) and allowing him to be in his own home which was something he never thought he would see again.

We knew we only had few days to put this plan in place, Hospice visited dad in the hospital and quickly put the wheels in motion. They arranged for a hospital bed to be delivered, which arrived the next day along with oxygen and all the necessary medication to keep dad comfortable.

Bringing Dad home allowed our Mum to care for her beloved husband along with his children and grandchildren, none of this would ever have been possible without the amazing Hospice team. Through the 2 week period of having Dad at home, the nurses were there with us every step of the way. They explained what to expect during the end of life journey and were always on call when we needed them.

3 weeks from diagnosis, Dads breathing became laboured and the nurse told us it was almost time. They brought knitted hearts for us all to give to dad to take with him and one for us to keep. We all gathered around his bed and sat with him telling him how much we loved him. Dad passed away peacefully on his 48th Wedding Anniversary holding his wife’s hand and surrounded by his family in his own bedroom. The compassion and care they showed our Dad and the family is an act of kindness we will never forget. They truly are angels on earth.

The care never stopped after Dads passing, they continued to check in and support the family. We will be eternally grateful to the Hospice team for making Dads final days comfortable and dignified.
